Vitesse figurehead Kashia wants to play in the Netherlands again: “It’s just very difficult”

Speed-figurehead Guram Kashia I really want to play football in the Netherlands again. The now 34-year-old stopper considers the chance only small that his wish will actually come true.

On the press conference prior to the duel with the Orange squad, Georgian international Kashia is asked whether he would like to return to the Netherlands. “Honestly, I hope so,” says the former Vitesse captain. “It is only very difficult because of the regulations in the Netherlands. Because I do not have a European passport, it is very difficult for clubs to contract me.”

As Kashia is listed as a non-EU player, clubs must pay him at least 150% of the average Eredivisiepay salary. “So I would like to return,” Kashia continues. “I only want to play for the best teams in the world, but that won’t happen.”

National coach Willy Sagnol thinks that Kashia would not look out of place in the Eredivisie with a comeback. “I have to say that he is still very good physically,” says the Frenchman. “All Dutch clubs can see that tomorrow.”

Kashia played for Vitesse between 2010 and 2018. In that time, the stopper grew into a fixed value and figurehead of the club. After an adventure with the American San Jose Earthquakes, Kashia is now active at Lokomotivi Tbilisi in his native country.
