Vitesse has suspended youth coach Patrick Ax, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The reason for this is an incident that took place on Saturday. Ax allegedly threw a floor squeegee at a youth player.
The trainer reacts cautiously to the news towards the Gelderlander. “I can’t say much else about it. The issue lies with the club.”
“But I take the blame completely,” Ax continues. “I am the adult and trainer of the group.” The incident reportedly did not come out of the blue. “According to sources around the club, the incident followed long-standing irritations on both sides,” writes the Gelderlander.
Ax has therefore been suspended, but hopes to return to the Arnhem club in the long term. For now, a ‘cooling-off period’ has been introduced for the coach. “A safe environment is above all at Vitesse and within the Vitesse Football Academy,” Vitesse club management said.
The 44-year-old Ax has been head coach of the Under 18 team in Arnhem since 2022, with which he became champion last year. Before that he was in charge of the players in the Under 16 squad.
Ax was active as a professional football player for FC Groningen, Vitesse, NEC, De Graafschap, and Go Ahead Eagles. After his time in Deventer, the former left winger was still active as an amateur footballer and finally retired from football in 2015.
At that time, Ax had been active as a trainer in Vitesse’s youth academy for some time. He was assistant coach for various youth teams, including Joseph Oosting, Theo Janssen and Nicky Hofs.
