vitamin D recommended to improve healing

The Academy of Medicine issued a statement advising the intake of vitamin D for treatments against Covid-19. The goal is to improve their efficiency.

While hydroxychloroquine is repudiated, the Academy of Medicine puts forward a molecule that would not necessarily come to mind in the first place: vitamin D.

In a statement, the Academy of Medicine pointed out that “a significant correlation between low serum vitamin D levels and mortality from Covid-19 has been shown”. Since vitamin D is synthesized from the sun’s rays, the areas between the tropics are less affected by the coronavirus. Spain and Italy are no exception, with people with higher vitamin D deficiency rates than in the Nordic countries, where the habit of taking it as a dietary supplement is high.

As a result of observing a correlation, the Academy of Medicine continues: “by mitigating the inflammatory storm and its consequences, it could be considered as an adjunct to any form of therapy.” But be careful not to confuse adjuvant and treatment: “Vitamin D cannot be considered as a preventive or curative treatment for infection due to SARS-CoV-2” warns the Academy.

Conclusion: “The National Academy of Medicine: recalls that the administration of vitamin D by the oral route is a simple measure, inexpensive and reimbursed by Health Insurance (…); recommends that the serum vitamin D (25 OHD) level be measured quickly in people over the age of 60 with Covid-19, and a dose of load of 50,000 to 100,000 IU which could help limit respiratory complications; recommends supplementing with vitamin D 800-1000 IU / day in people under the age of 60 as soon as the diagnosis of Covid-19 is confirmed. “
