JOGLOSEMARNEWS.COM – Vitamin D has an important role in maintaining the body’s immune system. During this pandemic, many people try to meet their vitamin D needs by sunbathing or taking vitamin supplements.
Vitamin D is in charge of increasing the body’s immune response to fight disease microorganisms. Vitamin D also plays a role in maximizing the performance of white blood cells to maintain the body.
Thus, vitamin D is needed when inflammation occurs in the body due to infection or in the formation of blood cells. Therefore, the body needs sufficient vitamin D. Otherwise, the body will be susceptible to disease and the immune performance in responding to disease will decrease.
Reporting from the UGM Health Faculty page, vitamin D, especially D3 can increase immunity and fight disease microorganisms such as the Covid-19 virus. Humans can get vitamin D from basking in the sun.
However, sun exposure cannot kill the Covid-19 virus. Dr. Arif Budiyanto emphasized that sunbathing activities only increase the body’s immunity so that the body is optimal to fight the Covid-19 virus.
The body cannot produce vitamin D on its own but needs help from sun exposure. In addition, sunlight is the main source of natural vitamin D, given that only a few foods contain vitamin D.
Madarina Julia, Professor of FKKMK UGM said that, “Vitamin D has an immunomodulatory effect that can improve the body’s immune system,” quoted Tempo from the UGM website on Wednesday, April 31, 2020.
He recommends sunbathing for 10 to 15 minutes at an appropriate time. Madarina explained that the correct time was 10:00 to 15:00. Because, sunbathing in the morning is not sufficient for vitamin D needs. Especially in big cities that have high levels of pollution, the morning air has a lot of pollutants such as heavy metals.
Madarina advises skin to be exposed to direct sunlight without barriers such as sunscreen, hats, and clothes. This is because these objects block direct sunlight exposure to the skin so that the body does not receive vitamin D intake. “At least the hands and feet are exposed to the sun,” said Madarina. #tempo
