Vitamin D Deficiency Increases Dementia Risk by 25%: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Study

American scientists have found that vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of dementia by 25%. This information appeared in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN).

Experts analyzed medical data of 270 thousand people aged 55 to 69 years, collected over 12-17 years. Of these, 20% of people had no problems with vitamin D because they took supplements. 34% were found to be deficient in this vitamin, and 18.3% were found to be deficient.

The analysis found that people who suffered from the deficiency had a 19-25% higher overall risk of dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia). However, this indicator was observed only in people with fair skin. In blacks, neither vitamin D deficiency nor vitamin D insufficiency was associated with risk of the disease.

Previously, scientists found that people with irregular sleep patterns are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
