Vitamin D Deficiency in Winter: Symptoms, Health Benefits, and Prevention

We know that sunlight an important source of vitamin D is. A logical question is therefore whether you produce less, or even too little, vitamin D in autumn and winter. We put the symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency.

Outwards

In winter we often enjoy nothing more than lying indoors on the couch under a blanket. Want to get outside in that cold weather? Bah, no, we shouldn’t think about that! But, there is a reason that you have tons of energy in the summer and in the winter barely the energy you have to leave your house! And that reason lies in going outside: getting outside for at least 15 minutes a day in winter already provides sufficient vitamin D.

Health benefits

Vitamin D also has an important function when it comes to your health: we need the vitamin for strong bones and teeth. Sufficient vitamin D also ensures that bone decalcification is limited and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. In addition, it plays a major role in the development of muscle function and is important for the immune system. The vitamin also reduces the risk of respiratory infections.

Prevent shortage

Vitamin D is produced by your body under the influence of sunlight, but unfortunately we are rarely exposed to sunlight in the winter. It is therefore advisable to use supplements in winter. Then choose vitamin D3 with a dosage of 10 mcg; this is easier to absorb. You can of course also get vitamin D from food; then prefer to eat oily fish. However, to prevent a deficiency, it is best to take supplements.
