In his opinion, there are three main reasons why people are interested in participating in such assets:
- their value is rising;
- they are open and democratic;
- give pleasure.
Buterin admitted that the community is rightly outraged by the current abundance of meme tokens with offensive and even “super racist” names.
However, in his opinion, this is not a reason to be biased in this category, since many other cryptocurrencies also “disappeared without bringing anything of value with them.”
Buterin recalled the idea he expressed 10 years ago, even before the official announcement of Ethereum, that the issuance of tokens could become a new way of financing for socially significant projects.
In this regard, he noted two promising areas for the use of meme coins: charity and games.
“It feels like there’s an untapped opportunity here to try to create something more positive, more cumulative and more lasting. But in the end, I think even this is fundamentally limited, and we can achieve more,” Buterin said.
He emphasized that it is worth focusing not on the crypto assets themselves, but on the quality of projects and games. This will allow you to take advantage of the trend by “going with the flow, not against it” and make a positive contribution to the ecosystem.
“At least there are more good meme coins than bad ones, ideally ones that support public goods rather than just enrich insiders and creators. But the ideal is to create games, not coins, and projects that people like to participate in,” Buterin concluded.
Recall that Messari head of research Maartje Bas admitted that meme coins will remain an important part of the crypto industry, noting their role in the adoption of digital assets.
