Some obese people are forced to undergo surgical intervention in order to lose weight and control obesity-related diseases, and this is what causes a major change in the shape and function of the digestive system, which requires careful dealing with the new health situation, especially during the month of Ramadan.

Weight loss surgeries are slimming operations that a patient who suffers from excessive weight gain resorts to, with the aim of getting rid of excess weight, and these are:
- Reducing the size of the stomach so that it can only hold a very small amount of nutrients.
- Reducing the absorption of nutrients from the stomach and intestines.
- Mixing the two methods.
What are the types of weight loss surgery?
There are many scientific techniques used in weight loss surgery, and they differ according to medical conditions from one person to another, most notably:
- Gastric bypass surgeries.
- Sleeve gastrectomy.
- Gastric band surgeries.
- Biliopancreatic shunt and duodenal transfer.
- Gastric balloon operation.
- Stomach stapling surgeries, such as longitudinal strapping.
What is the appropriate food for the patient in Ramadan?
Dr. Heba Al-Karjieh, a nutritionist, confirmed that patients who underwent weight-loss surgeries before Ramadan suffer from great difficulties in eating during fasting, which requires them to follow accurate advice in order to avoid any complications that could negatively affect their health. Among the most prominent of these tips are:
- Eat a meal that has a high nutritional value.
- Start eating the Sokhna soup.
- Set an interval between each meal.
- Not diversifying the yellowish food and choosing one dish.
- Not drinking water with food.
- The meal must contain carbohydrates, proteins and vegetables.
- Eat a small amount of food, but it is of full benefit and meets the needs of the body.
- Drink more water between meals.
- Have a snack during suhoor.
Dr. Heba stressed that the diet after slimming operations is very important in recovering after surgery and switching to a healthy diet, thus helping to achieve weight loss goals.
During the month of Ramadan, the patient must adhere to medical advice in order to ensure positive results, adding that returning to unhealthy eating habits after weight-loss surgery may cause a lack of excess weight to be recorded, and may result in a return to weight again.
