For the fifth time, Dvojka station invites its listeners to one of the Czech radio studios so that they can witness the creation, filming and broadcasting of a live radio broadcast.

This time, the plot takes us to the luxurious gardens of Javanese villas during the First Republic, to a modest but clean studio apartment in an apartment building on the outskirts of Vršovice, to the picturesque banks of the Vltava River in Chuchli, to the lawyers offices with deep leather armchairs and a hospital room.

Hana, the protagonist of the story, must go through all these places, supported by her enterprising friend Lída, to reach her moment of happiness.

The fact that there isn’t a church or wedding hall on the “places” list shouldn’t bother you. Marriage will also happen.

Inspiration in the Red Library

Vít Vencl, the author of a comedy about a moment of happiness that everyone desires, that everyone deserves, and that everyone will eventually experience, was inspired by the genre now more commonly called Red Library.

It was originally the name of an edition of novels for women in red cloth binding, published in the 1920s and 1930s by the joint-stock company Rodina. Its lesser-known counterpoint was the Blue Library, which published cowgirls and detective stories.

The golden age of romantic comedies

But the roots of the genre lie in history, the pioneers of the genre included, for example, Eliška Krásnohorská, whose Svéhlavíčka saw a total of three volumes. The Red Library experienced its golden years in the thirties and early forties of the last century.

Stories for women have been published in books, magazines and notebooks, such as List paní a dívek, Hvězda czechoslovakských paní a dívek, Pražanka, Evenings under the lamp or Reading for women. Although publishers occasionally acquired more famous authors (Jaroslav Maria, FX Svoboda, Olga Scheinpflugová, Jiří Červený), the main contributors were the writers Olga Fujerová, Vilém Neubauer, Marie Tippmannová, Marie Voříšková, Vlasta Pittnerová, Popelka Brady , Maryna Radoměrská, Vlasta Javořická, Jaromíra Hüttlová and Marie Kyzlinkova.

Virtually all authors were very prolific, the publication of several novels a year was no exception.

This Vilém Neubauer even wrote sixteen pieces in three years. In addition, his novel Sextánka has been made into a film twice. After all, the film adaptations of the Red Library books were quite common.

After 1948, the genre practically disappeared, which obviously did not mean that the sentiment, the kitsch or even the popularity of the happy ending disappeared from literature or cinema. The deep-rooted necessity of these phenomena is evidenced by the return and, let’s say, by the flourishing of the genre, also supported by imports after 1989.
