Visual artist Kees Verkade (79) passed away

Verkade lived in Monaco for a long time, where he maintained good relations with the royal family. In front of the princely palace in Monaco is a statue of Verkade, a monk with a sword under his arm. He was commissioned in 1997 for the occasion that Monaco was ruled by the Grimaldi family for 700 years.

One of his most famous works in the Netherlands is in Groningen, the statue Cycling lessons, from a father who pushes his son on a bicycle while running. He is also responsible for a resistance monument in Zandvoort. He also made sculptures of Simon Carmiggelt (Amsterdam), Queen Wilhelmina (Noordwijk), Frits Philips (Eindhoven), Louis Couperus (The Hague), Audrey Hepburn (Arnhem) and Anton Pieck (Overveen), among others.

Verkade lived and worked for much of his life in Monaco, where he passed away on Tuesday.
