In 2023, more than 62 million people visited New York City, representing 93% of pre-pandemic levels. According to recent data from the consulting firm McKinsey, this figure represents a significant increase of 9.3% compared to the 56.7 million visitors who visited the Big Apple in 2022.

By 2023, domestic tourist numbers reached nearly 95% of pre-pandemic levels, as more than 50 million Americans visited the city.

International travel is not far behind, at around 86% of 2019 numbers eleven million international travelers visited New York in 2023.

International visitors represent an important source of travel revenue, as they spend, on average, three times more than domestic travelers,” said McKinsey.

The number of visitors from Canada and Mexico has almost returned to pre-pandemic levels, McKinsey confirmed.

The city now expects to meet or exceed pre-pandemic tourist numbers by 2025.

Even though tourists are back, their behavior and mentality has changed.

According to a recent McKinsey study, 40% of American tourists surveyed said they are willing to spend more for unique experiences. This ends the era where destinations could be content to offer superficial, crowded or stereotypical experiences.

In addition, visitors to New York are always looking for the most iconic sites, such as Central Park, which still dominates as the main attraction, according to reviews on Tripadvisor.

However, it seems they are now ready to explore outside of Manhattan, looking for unique experiences and wanting to spend more time outdoors.
