When Sado Mine, the site of Korean forced labor, was registered as a World Heritage Site, Japan promised to install an exhibit related to Korean workers and hold a memorial ceremony as one of the follow-up measures.
The memorial service is scheduled to be held tomorrow.
A person who will attend on behalf of the Japanese government has been announced, but controversy is arising because he is an extreme right-wing person with a history of visiting Yasukuni Shrine.

The Japanese government announced that Vice Minister-level official Akiko Ikuina of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will attend the memorial service held on Sado Island, Japan on the 24th.
Political Affairs Officer Ikuina, a former famous singer, was appointed as a Political Affairs Officer in the recently launched Ishiba Cabinet after being elected to the House of Councilors as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party in 2022.
Political affairs officer Ikuina Ikuina, who entered politics with the support of the far-right Abe faction of the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party, said in a media interview when he was a candidate for the House of Councilors that “the Korean government should make more concessions” in response to a question about improving Korea-Japan relations.
On August 15, 2022, immediately after being elected, he visited Yasukuni Shrine, where war criminals from World War II are enshrined.
There are three political officers at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two of whom, including Political Officer Ikuina, have visited Yasukuni, but there are others who have not.
In a place that should have expressed reflection and apology to the victims of Korean forced labor, the Japanese government has chosen a person with far-right actions.
It’s not just this.
Recently, the governor of Niigata Prefecture, Japan, where Sado Island is located, said that this memorial ceremony was an opportunity to report to those who made Sado Mine a World Heritage Site.

“It’s not really that complicated, but it’s more like a report on the people who have been involved in what has become a World Heritage Site.”
The government is also unable to hide its embarrassment as incidents that go beyond diplomatic discourtesy and border on provocation continue to occur.
After the appointment of Political Affairs Officer Ikuina was announced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs suddenly canceled a scheduled press briefing and did not respond to reporters’ questions about whether the appointment was pre-coordinated.
