Square Enix delivered one of the most beautiful trailers at The Game Awards last week with the announcement of Visions of Mana, a new title in the classic Mana series. The adventure looks to offer real-time combat, several different biomes to explore, and plenty of enemies and monsters.
Other than the main character being named Val and having to travel to the Mana Tree to rejuvenate his Mana flow, we don’t know much about the campaign. Square Enix has clearly heard all the voices clamoring for more information, and so has shared the beginning of this new adventure in an X post. Here’s what it says, and spoiler warnings are unnecessary as it’s specifically about the start of the story:
“In Tianeea, the City of Fire, everyone is preparing to celebrate the arrival of the fairies and the appointment of an ‘elm.’ Every four years, elms from around the world are chosen to travel to the Mana Tree and rejuvenate the flow of mana power. A soul guard is also chosen who will ensure that the commoners’ pilgrimage goes safely.Val is one of these guardians.
On the day of the fairy’s arrival, Val brings her childhood friend to the festival. As the sun sets below the horizon, all the spectators wait anxiously in the hope of being selected as elm. Finally, the fairy descends in front of Val’s friend and appoints her the Elm of Fire.
The villagers bid them both farewell and pray for their success as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime.”
Visions of Mana launches for PC, PlayStation and Xbox Series S/X during the next year.
