The alternative metal virtuosos Primus ring in their upcoming EP “Conspiranoid” with a luscious 12-minute single. As usual, singer Les Claypool works cynically through the conspiracy madness of the last few years.
In conversation with Consequence Primus singer and bassist Les Claypool explains the genesis of the lead single “Conspiranoia”: “[Sie] emerged from a seed I planted in my notebook a year or so ago – a few lines commenting on the mental state of the world today. I watched distrust and chasms grow between friends, colleagues, relatives, and the general population as disinformation, misinformation, distorted information, and outright fairy tales were consumed and digested by anyone with even a hint of web design.” As a result Claypool felt compelled to illuminate the ridiculousness of these views in his writing.
“Lloyd Boyd was conspiranoid/ barking chem trails in the skies/ claiming Bill Gates had put microchips/ in the chicken pot pies,” says the new song, for example, in which Claypool spent a full 12 minutes on conspiracy theories, sometimes laid back, sometimes tricky funk basslines processed. “Conspiranoia” is complemented on the B-side of the Twelve Inch EP “Conspiranoid” by the songs “Follow The Fool” and “Erin On The Side Of Caution”. The EP’s title alludes to the “strange time of division, confusion, fear, frustration and social senility in which it was born,” added Claypool. Claypool’s son Cage was responsible for the psychedelic video.
The record will be released on April 22nd via ATO and will be available soon at bastard club be pre-ordered. It’s the first real release since 2017’s The Desaturating Seven, for which Claypool was inspired by the 1970s children’s book The Rainbow Goblins.
In the US, Primus are currently on the road as part of their “A Farewell To Kings” Rush Tribute Tour. There are also three concerts in Germany and Switzerland in autumn. Tickets are available at Eventim and directly with the band.
