Is titled Visionary Milan and is a series of comic encounters in a Spirited Away of Elena e Michela Martignoni. The large format album (22×29) is the second created by the team gathered around Marco Sarno, creator of the series “Clouds in the city” for Guida Editori.
After Who kidnapped San Gennaro? set in Naples is the turn of this comic story set in Milan. The authors’ story was carefully scripted by Giuseppe Ciarallo and then drawn by a team of well-known and expert artists who translated it into six black and white comic chapters, interspersed with color illustrations and cartoons: Gianni Allegra, Lido Contemori, Marco De Angelis, Luca Garonzi, Giuliano, Leo Magliacano, Cecco Mariniello, Marilena Nardi, Manlio Truscia. The cover is the work of Daniele Serra, internationally renowned illustrator, who has illustrated books by famous writers, including Stephen King e Joe R. Lansdale.
Who said that Milan is only business, skyscrapers, traffic, fashion and snobbish people? Milan can also be described in a different way. For example, through the eyes of a little girl who sees what others don’t see: dragons, fairies, saints and demons. The same little girl who, once grown up, now a high school student, meets Leonardo da Vinci and his disciples in Piazza della Scala during a student demonstration…
It is fair to ask: when the girl becomes a woman, does her visionary madness vanish? No, because she is genetic! In fact, the same magic also manifests itself in the younger sister… and so, in a box at La Scala, the two talk to each other Verdi, Toscanini, Callas…and at the Salumeria della Musica they smoke and cry with the ghost of Jannacci. But it doesn’t end here: the two sisters find themselves talking, at the Famedio of the Monumental Cemetery, with their idol, Alessandro Manzoni and with the characters of Betrothed.
As a counterpoint to these phantasmagorical encounters, the presence of a friendly and mocking demon, complete with an enormous fountain pen carried over the shoulder like a bow (he turns out to be the “demon of writing”). The latter first “takes possession” of the very young protagonist, then replicating her “kidnapping” with her younger sister, and then accompanies them throughout their lives, fueling their curiosity, imagination and literary inspiration.
At this point the reader might ask himself: “But aren’t these two simply played? Two clever scribblers, guided by a literary demon, who invent stories to enchant readers…”. Ultimately, writers and illustrators, lost in their daydreams, distort the real world. Who can say, though, what the real real world is? And above all: is it really that important to know?
The authors
The visionaries Elena and Michela Martignoni, Milanese and sisters, have written and published many historical novels, stories of all kinds, and a detective series – starring the Commissioner Berté, their alter ego – arrived at the fourteenth episode. Now they are looking for other literary challenges so as not to contradict their creative frenzy. The volume, only in paper edition, will be available in bookstores and on the main online sales sites at the price of 20 euros
