Virus hits exchange offices GWK Travelex, company takes sites offline

That confirms a spokesperson for Travelex’s UK headquarters to RTL Z. No online orders can be placed at all. Cash can be exchanged in the physical offices.

According to the spokesperson, the virus was so serious that it was decided to remove all sites from the air to prevent further damage. Research is still being done, but at the moment it does not seem that data has disappeared or has been damaged. Since December 31, a solution is being worked on.

Employees in several Travelex branches that RTL Z spoke to have received strict instructions. They are not allowed to make statements about the problems, but refer to the Dutch headquarters. That again refers to the British – global – headquarters.

Employees remain silent

GWK Almere, for example, refers directly to the head office for questions about the malfunction. An employee does not even want to say what customers are currently hearing. “We are not telling anything at the moment.”

Among other things, the Australian and British branches of the exchange offices let Twitter know that there are IT problems and that it is not clear when the malfunction has been remedied.

Multiple sites unreachable

Some Travelex sites are still up and running. The Australian and American sites are in any case accessible, although no orders can be placed. The Dutch, British, Swiss, Turkish and Belgian sites are unreachable.

GWK Travelex has more than 1400 offices worldwide. There are approximately 50 branches in the Netherlands. Those locations were taken over in 2004 by Travelex, an English industry partner.
