The spirited Panathinaikos left Bologna victorious, with Gerian Grant and Matias Lessor as protagonists: 77-82. At halftime, the score was 43-46. Among the spectators who filled the Unipol Arena (where the “greens” won their third European title 22 years ago, against the same team) were around 500 Greeks.
The spirits of Kendrick Nan and Kostas Sloukas gave Panathinaikos a lead in the second period: 32-40, with a flurry of three-pointers (9/14 in the first half). The home team got within shooting distance (44-45, 55-56) and finally overtook the foul-laden “clover”: 68-66 with a Polonara nail and Hackett’s three-pointer.
But Panathinaikos had the last word. Matias Lessor brought the European champion back to a position of power with back-to-back baskets: 68-72. Jerian Grant made it 72-75 with a stunning 3-pointer and immediately assisted Lessor, who made it 74-77 with a pin. Good shots by Grant, Nan and a basket by Juancho Hernangometh in the final seconds sealed the win.
Panathinaikos played without the sick Lorenzo Brown and the injured Grigonis, K. Antetokounmpo, while the participation of Kostas Slukas was decided at the last minute. The captain of the “clover” finished the game with 10 points and 7 assists.
Kendrick Nunn was the top scorer with 20 points, while Matias Lessor added 16 and Jerian Grant 11. Ergin Ataman also used Osman, Papapetrou 9, Mitoglou 5, Hernangomet 4, Yurtseven 7, Kalaitzaki.
From Luca Banki’s Virtus, Clyburn 18, Sengelia 17, Cordinier 12., Paiola 8, Zizic 7 stood out.
Panathinaikos now has 7 wins and 3 losses, while Virtus is 2-8. Olympiacos, which yesterday defeated Maccabi in neutral Belgrade and achieved its first double this year outside Greece, also climbed to 7-3.
Next week, Olympiacos will welcome Vaskonia on Thursday, while Panathinaikos will be tested on Friday in Kaunas against Zalgiris. Andrea Trinchieri’s team was defeated tonight at home by the leader (8-2) Fenerbahce 65-72.
