Virtual theater against the romanticized violence of Romeo and Juliet

The great lie of Romeo and Juliet is the name of the play, which seeks to attack those beliefs that, disguised as love and duty, are violent for everyone.

It is about a multidisciplinary staging that Enrique Arroyo undertook, a master’s degree in Management and Cultural Development, from the CUAAD of the UdeG, through the project Zip up -art and action-.

In an interview for Ciudad Olinka, the manager explained that This is not a remake of William Shakespeare’s play.

Rather, it is only a pretext to question what said story, tragic and idealized, represents in the imaginary and how it depersonalizes.

Shakespiare’s original play became the banner of romantic love, maybe wanting it or maybe not “

“From there, gender stereotypes of how to be a Romeo and a Juliet in a relationship were born.”

“We take these stereotypes and we take it to the forum theater, which is a theater of participation and what is staged are situations of conflict and the audience is expected to participate to solve them“.

He explained that the characters are adolescents who live situations of normalized violence.

Esther, Aldo and Alex face their own prejudices about love, flirting and sexting.

These protagonists are played by Esther Yuen, Donaldo Tornéz and Alejandro López. And it has the leadership of Enrique Arroyo himself.

“There are three different scenes: one is dating violence, another is about bullying and the third is violence between adolescent males.”

Theater to deconstruct

Zip up -art and action- It is a recently created multidisciplinary project that works from a gender perspective with emphasis on the generation of peaceful and supportive masculinities.
