The first bilateral talks between the leaders took place at a time of growing tensions between the two great powers. Biden has previously criticized official Beijing for its human rights abuses, its policy in Hong Kong and its aggressive actions against Taiwan. China, meanwhile, has accused Washington of interfering in its internal affairs.
In a video released by the White House, the US president told his Chinese counterpart that he did not want competition between the two countries to turn into conflict. It is possible to jointly solve global problems that are relevant to both sides, including the fight against climate change.
Xi also emphasized during the talks that both sides must help build a peaceful and stable international environment and seek effective responses to global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen and other influential Washington officials also took part in the talks.
