The virtual seminar on Dealing with the Consequences of War, organized by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), brought together representatives of the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense; the Office of the National Steering Committee for Dealing with the Consequences of Bombs, Mines and Toxic Chemicals After the Vietnam War (Steering Committee 701); the National Action Center for the Treatment of Toxic Chemicals and the Environment (NACCET); the United States Departments of State and Defense; the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam; among others.

Senator Patrick Leahy, permanent president of the United States Senate, said he appreciated the cooperation between the two countries in recent times in dealing with the consequences of the war. He thanked Vietnam for its efforts in the search for the American soldiers missing during the war. In particular, he stressed the importance of the signing by the two parties of a memorandum of understanding on the search for Vietnamese soldiers who disappeared during the war during the visit to Vietnam by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on July 29. .

For his part, Lieutenant General Hoàng Xuân Chiên, Deputy Minister of Defense, head of the 701 Steering Committee, thanked the United States for having jointly carried out many important actions with Vietnam to to deal with the consequences of bombs, mines, toxic chemicals / dioxins in Vietnam, as well as to promote full cooperation between the two countries.

He said he appreciated the United States’ commitment to continue to support cooperation in dealing with the consequences of war. He expressed the wish to find new solutions to promote cooperation activities and make them more effective, in order to accelerate the treatment of the consequences of bombs, mines and toxic chemicals / dioxins.

According to him, in the immediate future, it is necessary to accelerate the decontamination of dioxin in the entire Biên Hoà airport in the South, to better assist the Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange / dioxin so that they overcome their physical and psychological pain and their difficulties in life, to cooperate to accelerate mine clearance in Vietnam by ensuring the treatment of 50,000 to 70,000 ha each year.

In addition, Vietnamese representatives offered to the American side to provide information, documents and items related to Vietnamese soldiers who died or disappeared during the war, to share experiences in the search and identification of remains, to grant material and technical aid in Vietnam …
