Virtual! In this way Giammattei will be sworn in as a deputy to Parlacen

So that the same thing as former President Jimmy Morales does not happen to him, of being attacked by protesters during his inauguration as a deputy to the Central American Parliament, the now president Alejandro Giammatteiwill be sworn in virtually when he leaves the presidency.

Although it had been agreed that the inauguration session of the Guatemalan bench as deputies to the Central American Parliament would take place on January 23 and this would be in person, at the last minute, the board of directors of the regional entity agreed to swear in on the afternoon of January 14, 2024.

According to sources from Parlacen itself, there was opposition from some Guatemalan deputies such as former president Jimmy Morales, who proposed that Giammattei’s swearing-in and inauguration should take place as soon as possible, after he handed over the position.

Discussion in Parlacen

Although it was discussed for more than an hour, some in favor and others against, it was agreed by majority that the plenary session should be held as usual the last week of each month, that is, January 23 and 24.

But at the request of the Nicaraguan and Panamanian benches, which have worked hand in hand with former President Morales, the possibility of calling on January 14 or 15 was left open, with the sole objective of swearing in the Guatemalan bench. But the final decision was made by the Board of Directors, which, he assured, has the power to convene.

The sources indicated that the intention of swearing in Giammattei is not only so that he obtains immunity, but so that the Guatemala bench can collect half a month’s salary, which consists of US$2 thousand (about Q16 thousand).
