Now that the peak of the corona pandemic seems under control, the European Union is opening its external borders again. To the annoyance of all kinds of virologists. For example, Marc Van Ranst plainly calls that decision in Het Laatste Nieuws “dangerous”.

The EU has some restrictions, however: only travelers from 14 countries with equal or better control of the disease are welcome. And the Belgian borders will remain closed for the time being. “But the fact is that virologists are not thrilled with the opening up of European borders,” said Marc Van Ranst. “It is a danger. The situation in a country can change every day. There are no guarantees: in a safe country tomorrow can be a major outbreak, and then you should deny travelers from those countries access to Europe. Moreover, you should not look at the average situation in a country, but at the situation per region. How big is the virological risk in the region where people come from? Especially in a vast country, it is important to view the region by region. ”

Van Ranst does not board a plane himself. “My point of view is: stay at home. The furthest excursion I may make is to Efteling in the Netherlands. ”
