“It is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. People can be infected. It is transmitted through a bite,” said virologist Radostina Alexandrova.
The disease is asymptomatic in 80% of cases. Although in a minority of people, complications are possible. Such are the cases of both who died from the infection. The infected are from Haskovo and Sofia. All three are aged between 61 and 74.
“Approximately 19.5% of those bitten, a week later, get a rise in temperature, pain in the muscles, tendons, headache,” said the chairman of BAM, Prof. Todor Kantarjiev.
“The disease can be more severe, including encephalitis, and can be fatal,” Alexandrova added.
In order to limit the fatal cases, the health authorities sent a prescription to the capital’s mayor for additional treatment of the green areas. Since the beginning of the year, 9 countries in Europe have reported cases of West Nile fever.
