Virologist Steven Van Gucht: “Corona data has dropped to a relatively low level” | News

November is quiet for now and the krona figures have fallen to a relatively low level. That’s what virologist Steven Van Gucht says in Friday’s weekly public health bulletin. He adds that the new omikron variants BQ.1 and XBB now account for about half of the infections, which could herald another increase.

According to Sciensano’s dashboard, 55.4 people were hospitalized every day from November 4 to 10 due to COVID-19, keeping the number stable compared to the previous period. There are currently 812 people with corona infection in hospitals (-10%), including 46 in intensive care (-23%).

The number of new cases reported between 1 and 7 November – with an average of 701 new infections per day – also decreased (-25%) compared to the previous seven-day period. And in the same period, an average of 4.3 people infected with the virus died every day (-33%).
The positivity ratio is around 14%. The incidence in 14 days of the number of cases is now 99 / 100,000 inhabitants.

booster shots

The peak of the autumn vaccination campaign is now clearly over. While more than 330,000 seconds of booster were given in the week before the fall break, it was only 48,000 in the last week, according to the public health bulletin.

“Many vaccination centers are in the process of being phased out, but people can still get vaccinated by their GP, pharmacy or some vaccination centers,” says Van Gucht, who advises people with reduced immunity or other factors to risk of undergoing the autumn vaccination.

In total, by November 8, more than 3,707,000 people had received a second recall, accounting for 40% of the adult population.
