Virologist Marion Koopmans: ‘Really watch out now, no family parties for a while’

“This is what explosive growth looks like,” Koopmans told RTL Nieuws. “And that increase will continue for a while, before we see an effect of the new measures. They will only take effect tonight, so you will see the consequences of that next week at the earliest.”

So it will be an exciting week, the virologist thinks. “The increase is far too large for the phase we are in now. Many people have already been vaccinated, but a very large proportion of adults are not yet, or not fully protected. The concern is that this outbreak will not be limited to You are already seeing an increase in the number of infections in almost all age groups.”

The coming time will show whether the new measures announced yesterday will be enough to stop the outbreak.

Koopmans: “These measures are aimed at the places where the biggest problem is now: the parties, bars, nightlife. We will see if that works. But if the infections continue to go very fast, more may be needed. If things continue like this, we’re not going to make it through this.”

To wake

“A lot has been expanded at the same time, it has not come through very well that people still have to adhere to the basic measures,” Koopmans thinks. “Keep your distance, avoid crowds, stay at home and test if you have complaints. People were happy with the relaxation and held parties and barbecues. An entire group has also been infected there. Apparently, it is not possible to maintain those measures.”

Koopmans: “It is important that we wake up again. It is important that people really watch out to ensure that the outbreak does not spread to other age groups. I think it is wise to only come together in small groups, and Keep your distance there too. And don’t have a family party now, with all ages mixed up, but help to reduce the number of infections.”
