Virologist Koopmans shares threatening email on Twitter, Erasmus MC is going to file a report | Inland

The Public Prosecution Service said in a written response on Tuesday that it was taking the matter “very seriously” and asked Koopmans to file a report. The well-known virologist is sympathetic to this, but on Tuesday called it especially important that there are “real solutions”. “Threats like this are systemic, they happen to a lot of people all the time.”

Koopmans shared the hate mail on Twitter on Monday. The text contains shocking words. “That you still dare to show your gore corona shit on TV,” it starts. Then a variety of swear words pass by. “You filthy filthy monster of Dachau, you corrupt bag-filling folk scumbag who gets paid hundreds of thousands of black.” And if that wasn’t enough, the writer also refers to the attack on crime reporter Peter R. de Vries: “They shot the wrong one in front of the entrance to the parking garage, gross piece of unfinished softenon Nazi Schwab whore boy.”

Koopmans is not alone in dealing with online threats. The corona years ensure that tempers on the internet are heated further. The top virologist wants the Public Prosecution Service to take stricter action against online hate that people who play a visible role in corona policy have to deal with. “Shall we really start working on things like this next year?”, the virologist concludes her message.

Security

Anthony Fauci, the top medical adviser to the US government, thinks Koopmans should get security. He said that in an interview with Nieuwsuur. “She should receive security for her own health and safety because she is not allowed to leave this field of work,” Fauci says about Koopmans. “She must continue to do what she does because she is a highly valued member of the medical community in the Netherlands and worldwide.”
