Virginia Rometty Retires and Arvind Krishna Becomes New CEO of IBM

IBM announced Thursday January 30, 2020 that Arvind Krishna will take the reins of IBM. The 57-year-old will replace Virginia “Ginny” Rometty, who served as president and chief executive officer of the company as well as chair of the board of directors. From April 6, 2020, Arvind Krishna will be the CEO of IBM and will become a member of the board of directors. James Whitehurst, current CEO of Red Hat and senior vice president of IBM, will become president of IBM on the same date.

Virginia Rometty will remain with IBM until the end of 2020 as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. Then she will retire, after almost 40 years spent at IBM, including eight years at the head of the company. Under his leadership, “IBM has acquired 65 companies, developed its skills in hybrid cloud, security, industry and data, and artificial intelligence,” the company said.

Arvind Krishna architect of Red Hat takeover

Arvind Krishna, who joined IBM in 1990, is currently senior vice president of the cloud and cognitive software division.
