Virgil van Dijk scored the only goal of the match at the end of extra time in Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea at Wembley, in the 2023/24 English League Cup final.
A goal from the Dutch central defender towards the end of the second half of extra time, when a penalty shootout was already on the horizon, earned Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp the victory of yet another trophy, this time the League Cup, with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.
AT Wembley Stadium, despite the only goal appearing towards the end of extra time, the game was emotional and after 33 minutes VAR took action to cancel out a goal by Raheem Sterling. And, at 60, VAR appeared on the scene again, canceling a goal by Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch international, however, was not content and it was he who scored, with a header, in the 118th minute.
For Liverpool, leaders of the Premier League, this was the tenth League Cup in their history. As for Chelsea, which only occupies 10th place in the Premier League, this was the seventh consecutive final lost at Wembley, between the English League Cup and the FA Cup.
