A video on TikTok recommends removing parts of the washing drum to completely clean it. However, the washing machine can be damaged.

These tips are well-intentioned, but unfortunately they don’t always make sense. In the worst case, such life hacks can even become really expensive, for example if expensive devices are affected.

Recently, a TikTok video went viral and has been viewed 7.9 million times (Standing: 24 October 2024). The user shows how she removes the so-called drum ribs of the washing drum to remove the dirt underneath. The reaction of “cleanfluencer” Ann Russel (@annrussell03) shows that this is not a good idea. In the video below, she strongly warns against removing the drum ribs because this is not possible in all washing machines and can even damage the devices, which could require high repair costs or even replacing the washing machine.
Other experts also recommend against this cleaning method, such as Dr. Gareth Nye, microbiologist and lecturer at the University of Chester. In his opinion, this could cause the parts to become clogged and make the washing machine work less efficiently. “These sheets can also be easily damaged because they are very delicate. For this reason, it is always advisable to consult a professional if your washing machine malfunctions,” he revealed in a statement from Wayfair.de.
