Jose Mourinho in 2020 had time to comment on the question Manchester City who was accused of violating Financial Fair Play (FFP) who returned following a case of breach of financial rules in the Premier League.

Manchester City is threatened with severe punishment in the form of deducting points, relegation, and losing six Premier League titles. Manchester City have been accused of more than 100 breaches of financial regulations, following a four-year Premier League investigation.

AS Roma coach, Jose Mourinho once commented on the case experienced by Man City. According to him, this case is a shameful disgrace.

Mourinho recalled 2020 when he was still in charge of Tottenham. In 2020 Man City was found to have committed serious violations by UEFA regarding FFP rules in 2012 and 2016. UEFA finally punished Man City in the form of a two-year ban from appearing in European competitions.

However, this sanction was canceled by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after Man City won an appeal.

“Regarding the decision, in any case it is a shameful decision. If Man City is not guilty, being punished for a few million is a disgrace. If you are not guilty, you will definitely not be punished. Otherwise if you are guilty, you should be punished. So it’s a shameful decision . It was a disaster,” Mourinho said as quoted by the Mirror.

The Man City case began because The Citizens failed to provide accurate financial reports to the Premier League relating to details of club income, sponsorship and operational costs in the Premier League since 2009.

Not only in the Premier League, the Premier League also revealed that Man City had violated several UEFA rules, including FFP, from 2013 to 2018.

Then in 2020 Man City was finally found to have committed serious violations by UEFA regarding FFP rules in 2012 and 2016. UEFA finally punished Man City in the form of a two-year ban from appearing in European competitions.

However, this sanction was canceled by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after Man City won an appeal.

But Man City, who have been one of English football’s biggest-spending clubs since under new ownership in 2008, have now faced new accusations after the Premier League reopened an investigation since 2019.

The documents resulting from the Premier League investigation were leaked and published by German media, Der Spiegel.

“In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League can confirm that it has today reported a number of alleged breaches of Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club to the Independent Commission,” read a statement from the Premier League.

Man City is now threatened with a number of severe sanctions as a result of these violations, including deducting points, revoking six Premier League titles or even relegation.

“If you are not guilty you don’t have to pay a penalty. I am not saying Man City is guilty. I am saying if you are not guilty you don’t have to pay anything, you will not be punished even with a £1 fine,” Mourinho said.

“I know it’s pretty easy money for them, but it’s just principle. Why would you pay £8-9m if you’re not guilty? But if you’re guilty you should be banned from the competition. My criticism isn’t for Man City. I’m nobody- who knows whether they are guilty or not. I only criticize that decision,” Mourinho added.
