Viral rice bowl makes diabetics-diabetes, says an internist

Viral Instagram uploads saying the sugar content in one bowl of fluffier white rice is the same as the sugar in two tablespoons (tablespoons) of granulated sugar. The upload stressed that consuming white rice should be stopped because it can trigger bloated stomach and diabetes.

“Now you know where sickness and bloated stomachs come from. The solution? Stop eating white rice. This will solve many health problems that can arise from continued consumption of white rice,” said the upload.

“Whether you say that eating white rice has become ‘culture’ for us Indonesians or even if you want to ignore it, you will end up with diabetes, high cholesterol, fatty liver and central obesity if you don’t want to change.” she explained further.

Junior Doctor Network Indonesia internal medicine specialist, Dr. Andi Khomeini Takdir Haruni or who is familiarly called Dr. Koko, explained that the content of white rice is actually not exactly the same as sugar. Unlike granulated sugar, rice contains vitamins and minerals even though the levels are low.

Therefore, not necessarily eating white rice will result in a bloated stomach and diabetes. White rice will in fact trigger this condition if consumed in excessive quantities. This means that as long as intake levels are within range accompanied by physical activity, white rice will not trigger bloated stomachs and diabetes.

“Coolers are one example. He eats a lot of white rice. But they are rarely dilated. That’s because they need high calories (from physical activity),” she told detik comFriday (30/12/2022).

“White rice isn’t really a healthy food group. But it’s not suddenly dangerous. Until it’s eaten a lot, it doesn’t exceed the recommended daily intake limit,” added Dr. Koko.

She emphasized that a calorie deficit is the key. If the consumption of white rice is accompanied by physical activity, what will happen is a caloric deficit that will not trigger obesity. On the contrary, if the excessive consumption of white rice is not accompanied by physical activity, then what will happen is a surplus of calories that risks bloating the stomach.
