Yogyakarta –
Twitter social media was shocked by the circulation of photos of flashes of light called falling meteor at the top Mount Merapi. It turned out that the CCTV installed by BPPTKG to observe activities at the peak of Mount Merapi, also recorded flashes of light.
The photo circulated on the Twitter account @merapi_undercover on Friday (28/5).
“Meteor Falls on the Peak of Mount Merapi, Kali Adem, Cangkringan, Yogyakarta (May 27 2021)

Photographer’s testimony about the object suspected to be a falling meteor
The viral photo was taken by Gunarto (the owner of the @Gunarto_song account). When asked for confirmation, Gunarto told the beginning of taking the photo.
“The photo was taken from the Batu Alien location in the Kaliadem area, Cangkringan on Thursday (27/5) night. From the camera file it was 23:07 WIB,” Gunarto said when contacted by reporters, Friday (28/5).
Gunarto said that when he took the picture, he actually saw a flash of white light falling to the top Mount Merapi. Gunarto said the duration of the fall of the light was so fast.
“What is certain is that when I said that, I actually saw a white light and it was bright enough that it fell from the top to the bottom, I knew it was only one or two seconds, yes, it was very fast, it fell from top to bottom. I saw that it was right at the top. so,” he said.
He admitted that he often took photos of the night atmosphere. Sometimes he also manages to capture falling meteor.
“This event is similar to a meteor that I have seen so far, but it is very close because I know it is above the peak. But I don’t know, this is my perspective, because to be honest there was no booming sound,” he said.
The flash of light was caught on CCTV Merapi
Head of BPPTKG Hanik Humaida explained that the flash of light was caught on CCTV in Deles, Klaten, Central Java.
“In connection with the circulation of the news, we can convey that the CCTV camera located in Deles (east side of Mount Merapi) had recorded a flash of light on May 27, 2021 at 23.08.10 WIB,” Hanik told reporters, Friday (28/5/ 2021).
Hanik explained that at the time of the incident there was no significant seismic signal. Other than that, there were no reports of a thumping sound or anything like that.
“There is no significant signal from the seismic data and there is no reported sound or flash of light from monitoring posts for Mount Merapi,” he explained.
Hanik emphasized that BPPTKG could not confirm the flash of light. This is because BPPTKG’s job, said Hanik, is not to observe celestial bodies.
“One of the tasks of BPPTKG-PVMBG-Geological Agency is to mitigate Mount Merapi, but we don’t have a duty to observe celestial bodies so we can’t be sure what objects are seen in the picture,” he said.
