A US war veteran almost faints, literally, from the excitement upon learning that his Rolex watch, which he had bought more than 45 years ago for a few hundred dollars, could cost a true fortune. His reaction turned viral in Youtube and it happened during an antique TV show.
It happened during a chapter of Antiques Roadshow, a recognized program in which participants wear antiques for an expert to evaluate and calculate their value. One of the guests, who he called himself David and that belonged to the US Air Force, led a Rolex Oyster Cosmograph of 1971.
“I brought a Rolex watch that I bought in 1974 while serving in the army. I was featured in Thailand and while I was there I noticed that many pilots wore similar watches. I paid 345 dollarsIt was a lot of money for me back then. I earned between 300 and 400 dollars a month if I’m not mistaken ”he counted.
Although initially he intended to use it for diving, he thought that the expensive Rolex watch was “Too pretty” to introduce it into salt water and decided keep it in your original box, along with the invoice and all the documentation, and immediately kept it in a safe to this day.
The appraiser of the antiques program that evaluated the watch said it was worth between $ 150,000 and $ 200,000 in principle, but Oyster specialists considered it a very valuable piece and valued its value at around 400,000. Hearing that verdict, David fell to the ground on his back in excitement.
However, that was not the final price. The model is so “Extremely rare” and it is in such a perfect state that the value in an auction could range between 500,000 and 700,000 dollars. The war veteran could not believe the figure and let out a curse, asking if they were not playing a joke.
“No I’m serious. It is an absolutely fabulous find. It is one of the rarest models and, under these conditions, I don’t think there is a better one in the world“, said the expert, who warned David that “Please” will not wear the watch since if he did the price of the piece could fall to 400,000 dollars.
