JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – A complaint stating why 2 liters of cooking oil when weighed is not even 2 kilograms has gone viral on social media.
From the photo uploaded by the netizen, it shows that one of the 2 liter packaged cooking oil only weighs 1,848 kilograms.
“The price makes you cry. The content is annoying. Oil subsidies can’t be enjoyed by everyone.” wrote the netizen’s narrative.
So how do you explain that 2 liters of cooking oil doesn’t weigh 2 kilograms when weighed?

Responding to this upload, the Lecturer of the Department of Physics at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Dr. Edi Suharyadi, M.Eng. open voice.
Edi said this happened because the density of cooking oil was not the same as the density of water.
“The explanation is simple, because the density of cooking oil is not the same as the density of water,” said Edi quoted from Kompas.com, Tuesday (1/2/2022).
Reported by Kompas.com, the mass of water is 0.997 which is rounded up to 1 in kilograms or liters. This makes 1 liter of water weighed, then the weight is 1 kilogram.
