Saakashvili was arrested shortly after his arrival and taken to a correctional facility in the town of Rustavi, which is about 25 km southeast of the capital Tbilisi.
Police video footage broadcast by local media showed a large convoy of police vehicles entering the prison premises with flashing lights.
