The former president returned to his home country on Friday (1/10/2021). The politician who left Georgia in 2013 has been the subject of several criminal cases in his alleged abuse of power, including a crackdown on the opposition.

He has been sentenced to a combined nine years behind bars in absentia.

Saakashvili was arrested shortly after his arrival and taken to a correctional facility in the town of Rustavi, which is about 25 km southeast of the capital Tbilisi.
Police video footage broadcast by local media showed a large convoy of police vehicles entering the prison premises with flashing lights.
