YOGYAKARTA – The Yogyakarta City Government (Pemkot) decided to temporarily close three catfish pecel stalls on Jalan Representative, Malioboro indicated to provide an unreasonable price. The response followed the viral video of tourist complaints related to the price of catfish pecel in the Malioboro area of Rp. 37,000 per serving.
“The three catfish pecel stalls are indicated to be selling in the same way as intended by tourists, including the price,” said Yogyakarta Deputy Mayor Heroe Poerwadi after visiting the Malioboro area, Yogyakarta, Saturday (29/5/2021).
In addition to temporarily closing the three catfish pecel stalls, the local government will also summon the owners of the three stalls for clarification and information on Monday (31/5).

According to him, further action to be taken for the three catfish pecel stalls will be decided after hearing and conducting a study on the clarification from the catfish pecel stall owner.
The toughest sanction that can be given to the owner of a pecel catfish stall is to revoke the selling permit. The sanctions are in accordance with the initial agreement which became a joint commitment with traders in the main tourist area in the city of Yogyakarta.

Previously, Heroe hoped that the case would be a valuable lesson for all communities in the Malioboro area to improve services to tourists.
“One of them is how to serve and communicate with tourists,” he said.
He also asked street vendors (PKL) in Malioboro, especially culinary traders, to clearly state the price of food sold and not to trap consumers.
“What tourists or consumers understand when buying food is food in a complete package. For example, buying catfish pecel, of course what is expected is complete with rice, fresh vegetables and chili sauce,” he said.
Therefore, continued Heroe, the prices listed on the food menus sold by street vendors in the Malioboro area should have been made into one complete food menu package.
“Traders can still offer to buyers if they want additional catfish or other side dishes, additional vegetables, chili sauce, or rice, of course they will be given their own prices,” he said.
