Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (kok) told Yle at the Prime Minister’s interview session about the actions that the government plans to take and figure out to strengthen school peace and student safety.

Orpo said that the school shooting events in Viertola in Vantaa will be thoroughly reviewed, and then the necessary measures will be taken.

Orpo emphasized that even though the government intends to adjust the public finances with three billion euros, the government still intends to stick to the fact that an additional 200 million euros will be invested in basic education this government term.

– We will increase lessons and increase the number of adults in schools, the Prime Minister said.

According to Orpo, the governing parties have already agreed on increasing the number of adults. In practice, it would happen by moving the student welfare staff from the welfare areas back to the municipalities. According to the Prime Minister, the matter will be investigated.

New units

In addition, the Prime Minister supports an expert proposal in which hybrid units would be established for very violent youths, where they would receive multiprofessional help.

According to Orpo, such young people will not necessarily be in the same school facilities as other students in the future.

– If necessary, they must have their own place if they do not adapt and cannot be in the same premises.

The proposal is based on the children’s commissioner Elina Pekkarinen’s presentation on hybrid units. In them, child protection and psychiatric services would be combined.

The units would help severely violent and suicidal children whose condition seriously endangers their safety and that of their loved ones.

– This has to be done, Orpo said on Yle.

The prime minister shifted responsibility for children’s behavior to homes and parents as well. According to Orpo, adults should tell children that bullying is not appropriate.

According to Orpo, putting an end to bullying requires a large-scale attitude movement from both homes, parents and all adults.

Orpo referred, among other things, to the inappropriate conversation that adults have on social media, which serves as a bad example for children.

Orpo also said that school peace will be strengthened with, among other things, a legal project that prevents the harmful use of cell phones during school hours.
