Violent Thunderstorms and Roof Collapse in Dijon: Tuesday’s Stormy Weather Updates

Violent thunderstorms fell this Tuesday at the end of the day on the Dijon agglomeration. Very intense rains, gusts of wind, lightning… the stormy episode lasted half an hour. The roof of a convenience store collapsed in Dijon. There are no casualties.

Météo France had warned: the departments of Côte-d’Or and Saône-et-Loire were placed on orange “storm” vigilance from the start of this Tuesday, July 11, 2023, until midnight. Of “very strong gusts of wind, between 100 and 120 km/h“, of “heavy hailstorms“and accumulations of rain that can reach up to 40 millimeters in half an hour. This is pretty much what happened from 7:30 p.m., in the agglomeration of Dijon and surroundings.

In Dijon, the sky became very threatening around 7 p.m. The storm broke around 7:30 p.m., causing torrents in some streets in the city center, such as Boulevard de la Trémouille, slowing traffic. The very strong wind tore branches from trees in places. A gust of 109 km / h was recorded in the capital of Burgundy this Tuesday evening.

At Carrefour City on rue Jeannin, at 7:50 p.m., the wind rushed into the false ceiling, which collapsed, as one of our teams on site observed. Several customers were still in the store, but were not injured. The staff is also unscathed. The sign has been secured and closed.

After a sweltering day, with temperatures around 35 degrees, thunderstorms began to come to our region from the south of the Saône-et-Loire as well as from the Nièvre, towards the Morvan. In the Saône plain, the town of Fontaine-Française was hit by hailstorms shortly after 6 p.m. The storms also went up the Val-de-Saône.
