The sky was threatening for part of the afternoon and, as expected, it ended with a violent storm, this Friday in Rennes around 6 p.m. For an hour, the water fell on the Breton capital, generating traffic jams, disrupted rail traffic and, above all, flooding. As confirmed by meteorologists, it fell in some places nearly 40 mm in the space of an hour, with a gust of 103 km / h, a record in June.
The most impressive images, quickly posted on social networks, of torrents of water covering the stairs leading to the Breton metro.
In the streets, too, some motorists found themselves trapped in their vehicles, with water reaching almost to the top of the wheels.
In the Colombia center, near the Esplanade de Gaulle, a corridor linking the metro to the shopping mall had to be closed. In particular, the water rushed into several shops, leaving traders destitute.
“We’ve been here for nine years, we’ve never seen that,” testifies this shoe salesman whose business and back room were completely flooded. Equipped with a squeegee, like several other managers, the man tries to evacuate the water towards drains. “We are overwhelmed but we must not give up, we have no choice”, confides this Rennais, helped by security agents.
A little further, in the Colombier underground car park, it is the access ramp to the underground level that wanted to play at Niagara Falls.
In this exceptional weather episode, some residents of Rennes did not lose their sense of humor, however, already imagining the gondolas taking the place of the Star network buses to transport passengers…
