In Paris, France, a violent riot occurred, including the throwing of Molotov cocktails. At the heart of the matter is the pension issue. The flames are spreading across France.
Expanding in France Pension problem “Fire”
Nantes in the west and Lyon in the southeast. Fires were raging all over France. Paris, of course. Violent clashes were taking place below those who climbed to the roof. It was the Molotov cocktail that was thrown that caught fire. The flames spread to police officers, and the surroundings were desperately extinguished.
Behind the conflict lies the “pension reform” decided by the Macron administration. The retirement age has been raised from 62 to 64. Many people have rebelled against this, and protests such as demonstrations and strikes have continued since January.
Furthermore, people were angered by the fact that the Macron administration used a special provision in the constitution to force a vote on pension reform without going through parliamentary votes.
When President Macron made a speech in the Netherlands, he was jeered at about democracy. It’s not just the elderly and middle-aged who are resisting pension reform.
Student (22): “Democratically speaking, the pension reform does not speak for us. They should have elected politicians who would listen to us. I think it’s unfair.”
Although some radical actions have taken advantage of the demonstrations, according to CNN, support for the protests is increasing.
CNN reporter: “Support for the protests has increased since January. Despite the strikes and demonstrations, support for the protests is up 11%.”
Neither the labor unions that called for the May Day protests nor the participants seem willing to give up just yet.
Demonstrator (50): “I’m more determined. If Macron stays for four more years, I will protest for another four years.”
