Violent Protests at Eritrean Cultural Event in Germany: Several Injured as Riots Continue

Shortly before the event began on Saturday afternoon, about 200 protesters gathered outside and began pelting police and festival-goers with rocks, bottles and other objects.

Six of the 26 injured policemen have been hospitalized. Four event participants and two protesters were also injured, police said.

Germany and other countries have recently seen several riots over Eritrean cultural events, including in July in the western German city of Giessen and in September in Tel Aviv.

The event in Stuttgart on Saturday was organized by several groups considered close to the government of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

Tens of thousands of people have fled Eritrea to Europe, and there are deep divisions among migrants between those who still support the government and those who have fled to live in exile and strongly oppose Afwerki’s regime, which is seen as repressive.
