REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Head of the Army Information Service (Kadispenad) Brigadier General Kristomei Sianturi explained that the incident of the beating of TNI AD personnel against a motorbike rider who was following a funeral procession occurred in front of the XIII/Merdeka Military Command Headquarters on Jalan Teling Atas, Kota. Manado, North Sulawesi, Friday (5/1/2024) afternoon WITA.
According to him, the incident began when the group accompanying the body left the funeral home using an ambulance and were followed by mourners and attendants using two-wheeled vehicles. Unfortunately, the convoy was disorderly and caused disturbances for local residents.
At around 15.30 WITA, when the group of mourners passed through gate 2 of Makodam Merdeka, Babinsa reminded the group delivering the bodies not to make any noise. “But we didn’t accept it because most of the accompanists were under the influence of alcohol,” said Kristomei to journalists in Jakarta, Saturday (6/1/2024).
He explained that at that time the cortege of the corpse was actually getting noisier because they were pumping the gas on motorbikes that used exhaust pipes. This condition has also apparently been complained about by local residents who have complained. Disturbed residents spontaneously took to the streets to confront the group. “Local residents who saw the incident felt disturbed and became involved in clashes,” said Kristomei.
Seeing this incident, TNI AD personnel at the Merdeka Military Command came out with the intention of breaking it up. However, one of the group participants actually provoked him by swinging the exhaust. This triggered the officers and residents to beat the person concerned.
From the video circulating, there was indeed a clash between the participants in the funeral procession and residents on Jalan Teling Atas. The convoy of vehicles delivering corpses using noisy exhausts sparked anger among residents. A motorbike rider was seen who was using the exhaust and ended up being beaten by TNI AD personnel and angry local residents.
The provost officer was seen mediating the anger of the long-haired resident who was still trying to beat the motorbike rider who had fallen to the ground. Until now, the Merdeka Military Command is still trying to collect information about this incident.
