Violent Gang Conflict in Uppsala: Swedish Police Powerless as Violence Escalates

Swedish police appear to be powerless after a violent escalation in a gang conflict in Uppsala. Even kindergartens are prepared for violence to strike suddenly.

An alleged ringleader, referred to in the Swedish media as “the Kurdish fox”, is in Turkey. He is suspected of financing and delegating the attacks from abroad, so it is difficult to stop the spiral.

According to SVT, there is no prospect that he will be extradited to Sweden, and no signs that the Turkish authorities will attempt to arrest him. Meanwhile, the spiral of violence continues in the Swedish city, including with a number of minors involved.

Among the murder victims are a 60-year-old woman and a random 25-year-old who was shot in a stairwell on Tuesday while he was on his way to work. The perpetrators were probably looking for a neighbor who is the leader of a gang called the Foxtrotnätverket.

According to Swedish media, the 60-year-old woman was the mother of a person who was in conflict with this gang.

– Need better tools

Criminologist Manne Gerell at Malmö University describes the development as very unpleasant. Not least because it seems to be increasingly common that the violence also affects relatives of the gang members.

– We need better tools for children and young people who come out crooked. Nothing seems to work particularly well in Sweden now. Certain things seem to have a negative effect, he says.

Gerell refers, among other things, to so-called HVB homes, which are homes for children and young people with various types of problems. Several minors are said to have been recruited into criminal networks while they have lived in this type of institution.

Started with murder in Malmö

On the night of Wednesday, a minor was arrested after a new shooting incident in Uppsala, according to The Express , the fourth in a week. However, no one was injured.

The incident is being investigated as attempted murder and is linked to a conflict between the two criminal gangs.

According to Gerell, the escalation of violence appears to have started with the murder of Karolin Hakim on an open street in Malmö four years ago. She was killed when the gang members failed to get hold of her husband, who was the real target.

– Good evidence

On the night of Sunday, there was also a shooting incident where the target is said to have been a relative of the man who leads the Foxtrot network.

According to Gerell, it appears that the police have good evidence against the gang leader who is in Turkey.

– They should be able to put him on trial, but it will be very difficult to stop the spirals of violence when the money bag is there, and Turkey refuses to extradite him, says the researcher,
