Football officials in England expressed their shock after a fan chased referee Craig Hicks during a match in the English Football League Third Division between Port Vale and Portsmouth, on Saturday.
The incident occurred after Hicks awarded a penalty kick to Portsmouth in the 88th minute, from which Colby Bishop scored a goal, causing Port Vale to lose 1-0 at their stadium, Vale Park. Shortly before that, Hicks refused to award Port Vale a free kick.
This result means Portsmouth continues to lead, while Port Vale is only three points away from the relegation zone in 20th place among 24 teams.
The League and Referees Association said in a statement, “We were shocked by what happened. We condemn the irrational actions of this person. We will provide our full support to Craig and his team and will work in cooperation with Port Vale and the relevant authorities to bring this person to justice.”
Port Vale condemned the fan’s actions and said in a statement: “We remind all fans that entering the field is a crime punishable by law.”
Port Vale confirmed that it will cooperate with the relevant authorities in order to hold the violating fan accountable.
