While the defender held his proceedings in the violence case in the Oslo district court back in November 2022, things apparently went wrong for the offended man in his 50s.
A video from the courtroom shows how he gets up from his seat, walks purposefully across the floor, grabs the water carafe from the witness box and hits the opposing lawyer with it.
The blows are aimed at the defender’s head, but hit him in the neck and shoulder – before he runs towards the exit.
Drama: Thrown decanter at the machete man
The victim is tried to be held back by the woman who was the defendant in the case, before she too is dealt a blow with the carafe.
It all ends with a basketball match between the lawyer and the victim, before the latter is put to the ground. The basket attack is only ended when the police and the court’s security guards intervene.
Prison and restitution
Now the Ringerike, Asker and Bærum District Court has sentenced the man to five months in prison for the crime. He must also pay restitution to the defense attorney and the woman who was the defendant in a total of NOK 40,000.
In the judgment it appears that the reason for the carafe attack was that the victim was provoked by the way he was referred to in the defender’s procedure.
“It is also clearly aggravating that the relationship took place in the courtroom, a place where the actors have the right to feel safe and, not least, to be able to express the views they believe are necessary to safeguard their client’s interests without feeling any form of insecurity”, it says in the judgement.

– Under any criticism
Dagbladet reported the incident a few days after it took place. Then the man’s assistant lawyer stated that he had apologized to the defender and the court.
– The behavior he exhibited is of course subject to any criticism. Such behavior should not take place – neither outside nor in a courtroom, said the public prosecutor.
The man explained the incident to his lawyer as follows:
– He feels that over time he has been exposed to such clear condemnation and discrediting of the defender, that it unfortunately eventually spilled over.
Dagbladet has tried to get in touch with the lawyer who was attacked, so far without success. However, he has not previously wished to comment on the matter.
The case in 2022 also ended with the woman being sentenced to six months in prison for serious violence against the man.
