Broadcaster PowNed will report an incident involving a camera crew on Ameland. Residents of the Wadden Island are said to have attacked three journalists on Tuesday evening because they wanted to make recordings of the Sunneklaas festival.
Roy van den Berghe, editor-in-chief of PowNed, says otherwise The Telegraph that the camera crew was “jumped by a gang of twenty or thirty people who banged on the car window and stood on the hood”.
When the car with journalists drove away, they were chased by a number of islanders. “The camera crew raced over the winding island roads at 140 kilometers per hour.” The journalists were allegedly trapped several times.
Ultimately, PowNed’s car was rammed by the islanders, causing the vehicle to “suffer significant damage”. Then the journalists decided to leave the island. According to the newspaper, the coast guard even had to respond to safely evacuate the journalists.
But because this was not possible due to the rough seas, agents had to station themselves in front of the hotel of the PowNed team. The municipality of Ameland has not yet responded to the incident.
Police are investigating the confrontation
The camera crew wanted to make recordings during the Sunneklaas celebration, an alternative Sinterklaas celebration that is celebrated on the island on December 5. In general, the celebrants do not allow outsiders and do not share details about the content of the party.
PowNed confirmed on Wednesday morning that the journalists have now left Ameland safely. The broadcaster will put recordings of the events on Ameland online on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Northern Netherlands police have announced that they are investigating “a confrontation between two parties on Ameland, in which violence may have been used”. Officers separated the groups and entered into discussions with those involved. The police then took the journalists “to another place on the island”. No one has been arrested.
An editor-in-chief of PowNed says otherwise The Telegraph that the police initially did not want to record a report. Only after the broadcaster contacted the Ministry of Justice and Security did the officers provide assistance. A police spokesperson did not want to respond to these statements on Wednesday morning.
