In the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, more than 100 Eritreans were injured when a demonstration got out of hand. Hundreds of Eritreans who opposed the regime in their own country had taken to the streets.
More than 114 people were injured in the protest. Thirty of them were police officers, Israeli government sources report. More than ten Eritreans have been hit by Israeli police bullets.
With their demonstration, opponents of the Eritrean regime wanted to prevent an event at the Eritrean embassy in Israel from taking place. However, they clashed with Eritrean government supporters. Images on social media show Eritrean government supporters beating the demonstrators with clubs.
The Israeli police had to intervene. According to the police, the Eritreans pelted officers with stones and planks and damaged nearby shops. According to a police spokesperson, some officers feared for their lives and used their firearms to defend themselves.
A hospital in Tel Aviv reports that more than ten people were treated with gunshot wounds. About 40 protesters have been arrested for attacking police or carrying illegal weapons.
A large group of Eritrean asylum seekers are staying in Israel. An estimated 17,850 people are involved, many of whom have illegally traveled to Israel via Egypt. The Israeli Eritreans mainly live in poor neighborhoods around Tel Aviv.
