Violent Clashes Erupt in Toulouse’s Mirail District After Death of Young Nahel

Since 6:30 p.m. this Wednesday, the Mirail district in Toulouse has been in the grip of fierce clashes with the police after the death of young Nahel, 17, killed by police fire in Nanterre. Violence that lasted until the middle of the night.

A thick black smoke hides the buildings of the Reynerie district. The inhabitants of the district cough, inconvenienced by this pile of smoke. For several kilometers around, this cloud is visible. Already in the afternoon, behind the scenes, that is to say on social networks, calls for mobilization were launched. “For Nahel”, “All at the Reynerie at 6 p.m.” could be read on various applications, in particular on the networks fed by the far left. The anger rumbled and rose little by little in the minds of those who demanded “justice” after the death of Nahel, 17, in Nanterre, killed Tuesday by police fire during a refusal to comply. Only a few hours after these messages, words passed into action. In the middle of the Reynerie district, the first barricades have been erected. “For me they murdered Nahel. Normal here that young people are angry. They identify themselves”, tries to explain a father who attends the clashes.

Heavy tear gas shots

A first group made up of about fifty members of the extreme left sphere met. Garbage cans, miscellaneous and varied waste, objects of all kinds were collected and then set on fire. This small group finally took on thickness as the minutes passed. Masked with black T-shirts, hooded, shirtless, those who wanted to do battle began to take everything that was on the ground to transform them into weapons to throw at the police. The massive police presence on the spot responded with heavy tear gas fire.

After each salvo, the local residents who had become spectators of this demonstration of violence fled running to take refuge. “It’s nonsense, I’m scared I’m with my children,” says a mother, frightened and disoriented. She ended up finding refuge in a corner of buildings until the irritating fumes escaped. The ground was strewn with pebbles, cobblestones, pieces of cement but also bits of plastic from tear gas fired by the police. Proof of the intensity of the clashes between rioters and police. A climax reached when the police boarded two young people suspected of having thrown projectiles.

“You are murderers”

A special atmosphere reigned this Wednesday evening in the alleys of this district. Some were seated on benches watching these clashes without flinching while others continued on their way without even looking back. A kind of normality in an obvious chaos. The detonations of police fire mixed with those of the tires of burning cars which burst. The pungent smells of burning to that of tear gas. “You are assassins”, yelled young people in the direction of the police deployed in the center of Abbal Square. “Don’t play the cowboy, it’s not the Yellow Vests here”, threatens another in the direction of the police cordon which points at young masked men. Right behind him, new fires were started. Smoke can be seen in the distance. In several streets of Bagatelle, vehicles were also set on fire. In the middle of the evening, the anger had still not subsided. Blazes continued to rise before the eyes of the inhabitants.
