An operation to seize illegal motorcycles outside a Brooklyn shelter turned violent after some immigrants tried to prevent the vehicles from being taken away.
The raid left six people arrested and 16 vehicles seized.
The events occurred Thursday morning at a shelter for male immigrants located at 455 Jerferson Street in the Bushwick area.
The police began to confiscate scooters that did not have paperwork or that were parked on the sidewalk, which is illegal.
Although some victims claimed that they also took motorcycles that had the paperwork in order.
“The papers were there, why are they taking them? They should ask first, I think,” commented Aderson Aragón.
Several of the immigrants resisted having their vehicles removed and began arguing and attacking the police officers.
A small fight broke out at the time of the operation.
In the end, six people were arrested and 16 vehicles were seized.
Some affected people said they were sad about the removal of the motorcycles, which for many means their only method of earning income.
“A police officer told me to leave it there because otherwise things were going to get worse, they could hit me, I let them take the motorcycle,” said Luis Calderón, an immigrant.
“It cost me a lot, borrowing money to buy it, for the police to come like that and take it away from you,” he lamented.
Separately, one of the shelter workers noted that there were several complaints that vehicle owners were not following the rules.
“They drive them on the sidewalk, against traffic, it’s happening all over the city, but it has to stop,” he said.
Three of those arrested were charged with obstruction of justice and three others face additional charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

All motorcycle and scooter drivers must have a driver’s license issued by the New York Department of Vehicles (DMV).

The motorcycle must have all of the following equipment in good working order:

When driving on City streets, if you need to park your motorcycle, you need to park it on the street. Vehicles should not be parked on the sidewalk, the law states that they must be parked on the side of the street and at an angle of 90 degrees.
