Violent bombings shake Beirut suburbs – Diario La Página – 2024-10-08 09:55:51

Early this Sunday morning, Israel launched more than thirty bombings against different points in the Beirutian suburbs of Dahye, which experienced its “most violent” night in years, reported the Lebanese National News Agency (ANN), just the day before first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israeli soil that triggered the armed conflict in Gaza.

“The southern suburbs of Beirut recorded their most violent night since the beginning of the aggression, being the target of more than 30 attacks, the echo of which was heard in Beirut and whose black smoke covered all suburban areas,” ANN indicated. The bombings hit at least five different residential neighborhoods in Dahye, as well as a gas station located on the road that connects the capital with the Rafic Hariri International Airport, the only operational one in the country.

The Israeli Army confirmed the launch of a series of night attacks in the vicinity of the city, where it claims to have hit “ammunition warehouses and other terrorist infrastructure.” In the last week, its fighter jets and drones have bombed Dahye daily, a major stronghold of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah that had been largely free of attacks during almost the entire conflict that began between the parties in October 2023.

“It seemed like an earthquake”
A correspondent for the French agency AFP saw dozens of people fleeing the Sabra neighborhood on foot or on motorcycles, while explosions echoed behind them. Mehdi Zaiter, 60, said there were “bombings everywhere. They did not have a military objective, only civil buildings and private properties,” he denounced. «It was the most violent night we have ever experienced. There were so many bombings that it seemed like an earthquake,” he added.

The bombing continued this Sunday morning, while excavators removed debris from the old airport road. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported the death of 23 people, in addition to 95 who were injured in the attacks the previous day. Since September 23, when Israeli attacks intensified, more than a thousand people have died in Lebanon, according to authorities.
